Lake Lemon is located in the beautiful rolling hills of southern Indiana just 10 miles northeast of Bloomington, Indiana. The lake frequently attracts visitors traveling from as far as Kentucky and northern Indiana. Lake Lemon is the 11th largest lake in the state and 7th largest public reservoir in Indiana with a size of 1,650 acres, 24 miles of shoreline, and an average depth of 9.7 feet.

History of Lake Lemon and the Conservancy District

Lake Lemon was built in 1953 by the city of Bloomington, Indiana for the purposes of flood control, recreation, and a drinking water source. The lake was used for drinking water until the mid-1970's and presently serves as a back-up water source for Bloomington. Once the lake was no longer used as a primary water source, City of Bloomington Utilities began looking for a group interested in managing the lake due to the financial burden on the city's budget. Rumors even spread about possible plans to drain the lake.

In the early 1990's landowners around the lake began to organize in order to take over management of Lake Lemon. The landowners were led by Earl Eberle, Larry Ritter, and Bud Howard who literally went door to door asking neighbors to sign a petition which led to the inception of the Lake Lemon Conservation District (LLCD) in 1995.

According to law, a conservancy district is only required to meet four times a year; but the LLCD, with its seven member board, meets monthly. "This is conducive to carrying on business and getting things accomplished," states Ritter. The Board also is composed of volunteers instead of being paid as many conservancy district board members are.

The LLCD has accomplished many important tasks despite its young age. Nuisance vegetation is monitored and controlled frequently during the growing season. Rip-rap has been installed at many shoreline locations to help reduce shoreline erosion. The District took over operation of Riddle Point Park in 2002. Park maintenance and development is an ongoing task for the LLCD. Currently, the park contains a public beach, public boat ramp, shelter house available for daily rental, scenic hiking trail, demonstration prairie grass area, and many appealing fishing spots.

The LLCD Board has implemented its Sediment Removal Program (see SRP) for the past three years and hopes to continue the program in the near future.  This program will increase the life of the lake, benefit property owners, and maintain the beauty of Lake Lemon.
