History of Paragon School

The first school in Paragon was held in a house erected by Perry M. Blankenship in 1857.  The first teacher was Joseph Fletcher.  In 1866 a larger house was built on the same lot.  Finally, a brick school was built in 1882 at a cost of $2,500. I. E. Kerlin was the first principal.  He was assisted by two other teachers in the school.  In 1879, there were 6 all-male teachers in Ray Township.

On May 19, 1900, 2.57 acres of land was sold by P. M. Blankenship to W. P. Fletcher, Ray Township Trustee for $625.  In 1900, the Paragon School was built by Wesley Potter.  It was located at the north end of Main Street.  There were 10 classrooms, an office, and a library.  Mr. Hartman was the first principal.

In 1920, Paragon School expanded by 3 classrooms, an auditorium, cloakhall, clinic, and gymnasium.  There were approximately 250 students in grades 1 - 12 at this time.  Games played by students in this time period were marbles, baseball, Drop the Hanky, Skip to My Lou, Fox and Geese, jumprope, horseshoes, Simon Says, Mother May I, and Ciphering Matches.

Paragon School consolidated with the MSD of Martinsville in 1956. At that time, grades 1 - 6 were in Paragon School. As is typical for consolidations, many in Paragon opposed the merger. In 1970, the present school was built on the west side of town.

The land was traded by the Lions Club for the old school property and some additional money. Later, the old school was torn down. The bell was moved to the present entryway of the school. The cost of the school was $850,900. In 1975 the sixth grade was moved to West Middle School in Martinsville and Paragon School became a K-5 school.  Every year, the student population increases.

Our Mission

The staff, parents, and community of Paragon Elementary School believe that the school's mission is two-fold:  to teach students to be responsible to themselves, and to be beneficial to society.  When the students have completed Paragon School, they will have been given the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to achieve lifelong learning and a strong, positive self-image.  We, at Paragon, accept the responsibility of motivating and assisting the students in reaching their unique potential in a safe, stimulating environment.
