MSD of Martinsville Mission Statement
The Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Martinsville will develop and maintain integrated curricula and an environment of excellence in teaching/learning such that students become competent, confident life-long learners and productive, responsible citizens. Our activities will give rise to each individual developing a vision of his/her personal future where he/she identifies the requirements, masters the skills, and meets the challenges necessary for achieving that future.
Vision
The schools of the MSD of Martinsville are excellent places to learn. Time and proper assistance are provided so that all students are expected to learn and do learn at very high levels.
Each school provides an orderly environment with rules, values, high expectations, caring, and commitment that together create a healthy family-type atmosphere. All school personnel care; they model the obligation and desire to teach; and promote the academic and personal success of each student.
As importantly, parents participate in the education of their children, and their active and supportive involvement is continually sought.
Paragon Elementary Mission Statement
The staff, parents, and community of Paragon Elementary School believe that the school's mission is two-fold: to teach students to be responsible to themselves and to be beneficial to society. When the students have completed Paragon School, they will have been given the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to achieve life-long learning and a strong, positive self-image. We, at Paragon, accept the responsibility of motivating and assisting the students in reaching their unique potential in a safe, stimulating environment.
Paragon students will master the Indiana State Academic Standards set for grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
Paragon students will master the Indiana State Academic Standards set for math computation
Paragon students will maintain or exceed 96.5% daily attendance
Benchmark for these goals are subject to yearly revision.
I, along with a caring and hard-working staff, welcome you to Paragon Elementary. Our intent is to provide you with a happy environment where you can learn and grow.
The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint you with our school policies and procedures. We strive to be consistent and fair, while maintaining a safe, learning environment for you. However, there are certain responsibilities you have as a student here at Paragon. You are expected to know the school rules and follow those rules. Your parents and teachers will review school rules with you so that you can understand those rules and learn to follow them while you are here.
The staff, your parents, and you share a common concern in wanting you to develop a strong mind and body, a healthy personality, great friends, and wholesome values. We all must work together to make this possible.
Your parents will most likely want to be involved in helping you learn and grow. The Paragon PTO has been very supportive in providing opportunities for students and families to become involved at our school. Please encourage your families to share in your school life by volunteering at school and helping with the many activities provided by the PTO.
If you have any questions about the rules and procedures in this booklet, please feel free to come and talk to me about your concerns. I am always happy to speak to anyone who wants our school to be a better place to learn and grow.
Again, we welcome you to Paragon Elementary. We are happy to have you join us as a Paragon Panther.

AIPHONE Security System
Parents are welcome to visit Paragon Elementary School. In order to protect the safety of our students and staff, there are some procedures that must be followed. Any individual entering our school must enter through the main doors. There is a box mounted on the right brick wall near the main entrance. Please press the button and state your name and the nature of your business to gain entrance. Once inside, please follow the visitor procedure listed below:
Please respect all school procedures/rules that are expected of our students and staff while visiting our school
All visitors are required to check in at the office upon their arrival
Sign your name in the guest book and get a visitor's pass
Call ahead to schedule conferences
We ask that children do not visit unless accompanied by an adult who is responsible for them
For the safety of the students, no guests are allowed to play with the children on recess
Parents who wish to eat lunch with their children should call the office by 9:00 a.m. that day to reserve a lunch
Volunteers
See attached note from the Principal
Any person who plans to volunteer at the school, chaperone a field trip, or have any instance where they will be in direct contact with students will need to complete a Criminal History Check form so the principal is authorized to do a Criminal History and Sex Offender Registry check prior to permitting the volunteer to be near students. All requests for clearance must be completed and returned at least 48 hours prior to the date of service. Applicants will be notified if there is reasonable cause to deny their request.
Once a request to volunteer has been approved, the PTO will prepare a name tag that will be ready upon your arrival to volunteer. The name tag must be returned at the time of your departure and is kept for future volunteer opportunities.
Open Communication is Key
Communication is an essential part of the education program. We feel it is very important for parents to keep in close contact with their child's teacher concerning his/her progress. From time to time, your child may bring home notes or newsletters from school. Open communication is important to the child, as well as the parents. Please read newsletters, progress reports, and classroom communications carefully. Should you have any questions or concerns, please fell free to send an email, write a note, or call the school office. We also have a school website which features student activity highlights, staff email addresses, and a school calendar. The MSD of Martinsville website has a link to Paragon's webpage along with other information that concerns all schools in the district.
Some questions and concerns may be handled through our Family Access internet program if you have a computer with internet capabilities, provided you can show your photo ID as proof of being the parent or guardian, and complete a form to obtain a user name and password. This permission form for use can be obtained at the MSD of Martinsville's Administrative Office located at 460 S. Main Street in Martinsville.
Once you have a user name and password, using your internet browser, you will type in the MSD of Martinsville's web page. There is a link to Family Access. Once you have entered your user name and password, you will be able to view information relating to your children as it is contained in the corporation's database called Skyward. You will have access to your child's attendance records, scheduling information, and food service information (including what was purchased on specific days and the cost of items).
MSD of Martinsville Student Conduct Code
Discipline guidelines are determined by the MSD of Martinsville Student Conduct Code, which is in alignment with the Indiana Student Discipline Code. Very strict guidelines regarding firearms, habitual truancy, and "bullying" were set forth by the General Assembly in 2005. The term "bullying" means overt, repeated acts or gestures including:
verbal or written communications transmitted;
physical acts committed; or
any other behaviors committed;
by a student or group of students against another student with the intent to harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate, or harm the other student. Due to the legislature's actions, many cases of "bullying", truancy, and harassment are no longer confined to the school setting and can now become a subject of judicial review.
All discipline issues are handled on an individual basis. We feel that students are responsible for their own actions. If a problem arises, steps are taken to correct the problem. These steps include counseling, conferences with the parents, in-school suspensions, and suspensions and expulsions from school. The "Discipline" sheet that is to be signed and returned by parents at the time of registration provides a full explanation of the discipline policy.
Weapons Policy
The MSD of Martinsville Board of Trustees policy handbook states that "knowingly possessing, handling, or transmitting a knife or any other object that can reasonably be considered a weapon" can result in the suspension and/or expulsion of a student.
Expectations
At Paragon Elementary, we have high expectations for our students. Procedures for conduct are posted throughout the building and are in alignment with the Six Pillars of Character Counts: Responsibility, Respect, Citizenship, Caring, Fairness, and Trustworthiness.
Homework
Homework is an important instructional tool and should be taken very seriously. Make certain you become familiar with the classroom teacher's homework policy. Parents should provide their children with an atmosphere conducive to completion of homework. Parents may be asked to sign student agenda books to ensure homework activities are being completed.
Restroom
Use the restroom safely, quietly, and quickly.
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Leave the restroom clean, or cleaner than you found it.
Report any problems to your teacher immediately.
Follow hallway procedures to and from the restroom.
Hallway
Use the life skill of patience in line.
Walk quietly in line with hands at your sides and eyes to the front.
Keep to the right unless otherwise instructed.
Be respectful of people, learning, and property.
Audience
No put downs, whistling, or other distracting behaviors.
Active listening.
Students must stay seated and quiet during the program.
Hold questions or remarks until requested.
Stay in line and quietly follow the teacher back to class.
Playground
Follow directions the first time they are given.
Respect adult authority.
Use equipment according to the rules.
Respect everyone's personal space.
Use appropriate language.
Toys or equipment from home are not allowed.
Flip flops are not considered safe shoes to wear on the playground, due to the various possible hazards. While open toed shoes are discouraged, they are permitted, provided there is a fastened strap around the ankle.
A child may be excused from recess for legitimate reasons for one day with a note from the parent. A doctor's statement is required if the parent wishes to restrict their child's participation for more than one day.
Miscellaneous
Before a student brings a toy or an animal to school, the student must have prior permission from their teacher. Animals must be in a cage or restrained. Animals that could potentially injure a child are not allowed.
Animal and Toy Restrictions
Before a student brings a toy or an animal to school, the student must have prior permission from their teacher. Animals must be in a cage or restrained. Animals that could seriously injure a child are not allowed. Footballs have been excluded due to possible injury.
Students should select modest clothing and appropriate footwear that provides maximum safety and comfort. Shorts are permitted up until Halloween. Students may resume wearing shorts after Spring Break. The length of an appropriate pair of shorts/skirt can be measured to the end of the middle finger when the student is standing up straight, with their extended hands to their sides. Tops and short/pants should be long enough to cover the waist area, so not to expose the midriff and naval. Tank tops and sleeveless sports jerseys are not permitted, unless worn over a t-shirt. Any writing or graphics on clothing/accessories should be wholesome and not offensive or suggestive to others. Examples of inappropriate choices would be: sandals without a strap, flip-flops, halter tops and net shirts. Platform shoes have also been excluded, along with shoes with rollers. NO HEELYS! These shoes present a hazard on the stairs and playground equipment. Tennis shoes or sneakers are the best choices for shoes, as they provide maximum comfort and safety for children.
No clothing may be worn that promotes tobacco, illegal drugs, alcohol, profanity, or gang activities. Loose jewelry and make-up are discouraged. Wallet chains or any accessory that could get entangled in equipment are not permitted. When classroom teachers perceive attire to be inappropriate for a classroom setting, suitable clothing will be provided or parents will be notified to provide suitable clothing. The school corporation is not responsible for any clothing, accessory, or items brought to school. The principal may exclude any clothing or accessory that could be considered dangerous to the well being of the student(s) or staff.
School attendance is mandated by state law and is the responsibility of the parents. The following are excusable absences:
Illness, family illness, or temporary physical disability
Death and funeral of a member of the immediate family
Religious observances
Court appointments
Absences that are pre-arranged and approved by the principal
Forms to be filled out prior to the pre-arranged absences are available in the office. These forms may be approved only on the following conditions:
The request is made at least three days prior to the first day of travel.
Request may be made once a year for a maximum of five days.
School work must be made up within five school days after returning to school.
Family travel will not cause the student to exceed 10 days of absences per semester or 12 days per school year.
If your child is absent, please call the school as soon as possible. Following the absence, students are required to present a written excuse from the parent or physician. It is the student's responsibility to make up work that was missed during the absence. Students are allowed up to 12 days of absences for the entire school year (no more than 10 days per semester). Any absence, which exceeds the 12-day limit, will require a physician's statement for each day absent. Additional absences may warrant an investigation by our attendance officer.
Perfect attendance is determined when a student has had no absences, tardies, or early releases for the entire school year.
Tardiness
When a child is tardy, they should first report to the office before reporting to class. Students are considered tardy if they arrive after 9:00 a.m. but before 12:15 p.m. If they arrive after 12:15 p.m., the student is considered present for a half day. Early dismissals after 12:15 p.m. are recorded as a tardy.
Excused Tardies
Doctor or dental appointment
Family travel (prior permission)
Emergency
Funeral of a relative or close friend
Early Release
Early releases are interruptions to the classroom environment and should be limited to reasons such as doctor and dental appointments and emergencies. We realize it is impossible for all appointments to be made outside the school day, so we have a procedure to follow in case an early release is necessary.
Whenever possible, please send a note to the teacher so the teacher may adjust the classroom schedule. If possible, please avoid your child being absent during a test time or a crucial instructional time. Students will only be released to a parent or authorized adult. The secretary may ask for a photo ID. When the parent reports to the office, he/she will sign the Early Release Log on the counter. Parents are not to go directly to the classroom, cafeteria, or playground. The school secretary will contact the classroom to have the child report to the office for dismissal. Teachers have been instructed not to release any child from the classroom without a note from the parent/guardian or notification from the office.
If the child's mother or father has a court-ordered no contact provision with the child, a copy of the signed court order is required to be on file in the office. If there is any question of authorization for the release of dismissal, the child will not be released until the question is resolved.
Book Fees
The instructional materials fee for elementary children is established by the MSD of Martinsville Board of Trustees. Payments may be made using cash or checks. Checks should be made payable to Paragon Elementary School. Fees are paid at time of registration. Forms for textbook assistance will be distributed at registration and/or upon request. Please contact the office if you want to be on a payment plan.
Student wellness is crucial to maximize learning capacities. Our corporation has a Wellness Policy to govern appropriate nutrition and exercise. Paragon wellness guidelines are prepared within the requirements of the corporation Wellness Policy.
Nutrition
Children have approximately 25 minutes each day to pick up their lunch, eat, deposit their utensils, and throw away uneaten food. Children are not permitted to leave the building during lunch period unless special permission is requested, in writing, by the parents.
At Paragon School, we are pleased to be able to offer a hot meal prepared in the school's kitchen. Students who bring their lunch my purchase milk, juice, or water. Fast food or soft drinks are not permitted to be brought in for lunch. Students may also purchase breakfast each morning and should report by 8:35 a.m. if they intend to eat breakfast. Bus drivers release breakfast students upon arrival so they may have ample time to eat.
All students will receive a "private" pin number that will be tied directly to a family account. This means that a family can issue one payment that will be applied to all students within their family who attend school in the MSD of Martinsville. Each time a student makes a purchase, they will enter their pin number. Parents may request an itemized statement of their account at any time. Account balances may be checked on Family Access or by calling the school cafeteria or Food Service.
School Nurse/Medication
The school nurse's responsibilities are designed to promote the physical, emotional, and mental well being of each child. This is done through:
vision screening
fluoride rinses
immunization monitoring
classroom instruction
visits to Bradford Woods while fifth graders are camping
basic aide training (BAT) for fourth grade
manage the school's clinic
The clinic is located next to the school office area for children who become ill or injured at school. Children must obtain a pass from a staff member to be admitted to the clinic, except in case of an emergency.
Oral medication is administered in the clinic and the office. The following guidelines must be observed:
The medication must be sent in the original container. Your pharmacist will prepare a second labeled bottle for school, if requested.
Your child must have a dated, written note from his/her parent stating the amount to be given, time to be given, description of the medication, and permission to administer medication.
No medication may be sent home with a student. A parent must pick up the medication at the end of the day. This policy includes prescription and over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, aspirin, and cough drops.
If you have any questions about sending medications to school, please contact the school.
Head Lice
At times, students will come into contact with head lice. The presence of head lice is no reflection on cleanliness...it can happen to anyone. To help prevent an infestation of lice, we give the entire school head checks at least twice a year. In addition, we check each classroom, if there is a known case of lice in that room. New students may be checked at the time of enrollment.
Our school district has a nit-free policy, which indicates that all nits (eggs) have been removed from the hair before the student can return to school. In cases of repeated re-infestations, our nurse and/or Family Services Coordinator will make a home visit to assist our parents.
If your child has nits or lice, consult your family doctor or ask the nurse to check the student. If confirmed, get the recommended treatment and follow the directions on the box. All nits must be removed from the hair shafts before a student could return to school. Your child will be examined again when he/she returns to school.
There is some evidence that lice has developed an immunity to many products on the market. We are pleased to inform you that there is a treatment that is effective, inexpensive, and safe. Pure mayonnaise has been shown to suffocate lice and kill them. Contact our school nurse for more information.
Immunization and Documentation
The more important aspects of a 1976 State Law concerning health measures for children are:
All elementary children in grades K-5 are required to be immunized against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, measles, rubella, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, mumps, and chicken pox.
The only exceptions to these requirements are children for whom vaccines are medically contradictive (allergic reactions) or children whose parents have filed a written statement of religious or other serious objection.
The unsupported parental history of either immunization or clinical illness will not be sufficient to meet requirements. There must be documentation of the receipt of vaccine.
The local health department serving the area will provide immunizations if the parent is unable to secure them from a physician.
No child will be permitted to attend school beyond the first day of school unless the child is either fully immunized or has begun immunization and produces a schedule for completion of the process.
Physical Education
Students participate in physical education two times a week with our physical education teacher. Students must have proper footwear. Students may wear their tennis shoes to school or bring them to school and changed when they go to PE Platform and sandal type tennis shoes, dress shoes, baggy pants, and dresses are not appropriate items to wear for PE
If, for any reason, it is necessary to restrict your child's participation in the PE program, you must send a written explanation to school stating the specific health problem. This will enable the PE teacher to adapt activities to fit your child's needs and capabilities. If the health problem is long-term, a physician's statement is required.
Character Counts
Our school corporation utilizes the Six Pillars of Character as designated in the Character Counts program. Those pillars are listed at the end of this publication. It is important that parents are familiar with these common terms so that reinforcement of character building can occur at home and school.
Accidents
Any student who is injured at school, on the school bus, or while participating in any school authorized activity should report the accident to their teacher, activity supervisor, school nurse, secretary, and/or principal.
When a student has an injury or illness that may require immediate treatment, the parent will be notified at home or at work. If parents cannot be notified in a reasonable amount of time, advice may be sought from the emergency contacts listed on the student emergency card. Parents are responsible for making certain all contact information is kept current and should notify the school of any changes in information.
The emergency contact information should be completed on each registration card so that parents/guardians may be quickly contacted in an emergency. Information on the card should be updated if there are changes in phone numbers, places of employment, or emergency phone numbers.
Fire
A continuous alarm is sounded. Teachers will explain which exit to use from their rooms. Walk...DO NOT RUN. Go quietly to the designated area. Directions are posted in each room by the door. Class groups must stay together so the teacher can check the class roll. Fire drills are conducted each month.
Severe Weather
An announcement over the intercom system will be made directing teachers to take their classes to the designated areas of safety. A plan for taking shelter has been developed for our school. If the electricity is not working, an air horn will sound three long blasts to direct the classes to their designated areas. Students are expected to walk quietly to their area and remain quiet awaiting further instructions. Severe weather drills are conducted each semester. Unless it is a rare circumstance, it is advisable to leave students within their safety area during severe weather. Parents, who pick up their children in the middle of severe weather, risk their safety, the safety of their children, and the safety of school personnel who should also remain sheltered.
Earthquake
In case of an earthquake, students will be directed to get under their desks or tables; or if possible, to leave the building to a safe, open area.
A crisis plan has been formulated for our building including the above procedures, as well as, potential dangerous situations for our students. These plans are reviewed by the staff regularly, and equipment is provided for the safety of each child in emergencies. In an emergency situation, which results in an unsafe building, the students will be taken to Paragon Christian Church, where dismissal will occur.
When severe weather closes school before the day begins, local radio stations are the first to be contacted and serve as the best source of information. When possible, announcements are made before 6:30 a.m. Tune your radio to WCBK (102.3). Superintendent of Schools or designee may make a mass call to parents' primary phone numbers to tell parents of a school closing. Please do not call the school office for closing information.
Emergency School Closing (during the day)
Arrangements should be made in advance in the event of an emergency school closing. Please discuss with your child what he/she is to do if students are sent home during the school day. Please make sure your child's teacher knows these plans.
Library Policies
Return all books promptly.
The rules for the care of library books are the same as for textbooks. Please do not write or mark in books. Do not bend or tear pages. Do not remove codes.
Classes are scheduled to use the library each week. Permission is necessary if a student wishes to use the library at a time other than the regularly scheduled class time.
All items checked out from the library become the responsibility of the child and parents. Items that are damaged, lost, or not returned for any reason will be charged to the person.
The computer lab is available to all students. At the beginning of the school year, internet user policies and permission forms are given to parents. Before students are allowed to use the internet, they, and their parents, must sign the permission form. Any student who violates this agreement will have their privileges revoked. No personal information, such as addresses or phone numbers, are posted on our web site.
The Paragon PTO is a volunteer organization through which parents, students, and school personnel work together in a positive manner to deal with issues related to Paragon Elementary School.
The PTO offers a variety of support for the school. A number of family and fund-raising activities are scheduled throughout the year. The funds raised are used to support convocations and purchase items for the students and school.
At Paragon Elementary, we are fortunate to have a very active PTO. The PTO has provided the necessary support to enhance the educational environment for the children at Paragon. Please watch newsletters throughout the year, or call the school office, for information on how you can become involved with this group. The scheduled PTO Board usually meets monthly. PTO functions are usually scheduled the second Tuesday of each month.
The Paragon PTO typically handles all of our school's fundraisers. On average, we have one in the fall and on in the spring. Parent's consent is required to participate.
If a student is having difficulty with schoolwork, being socially inappropriate, or has a disability, a General Education Intervention (GEI) conference may be convened. This conference may be requested by a parent or staff member and includes staff, parents, and support personnel.
There may be occasions when the GEI team recommends testing to determine possible learning disabilities. If warranted, our resource teacher and/or speech language teacher is assigned to give personal assistance to a student.
Resource Teacher
The MSD of Martinsville provides a teacher to support the educational requirements of students who have been identified as having special needs. These students are assigned to regular classrooms and participate actively in the life of the school. The resource teacher will meet each student on a daily basis or as a consultant to the student's teacher as determined by the student's individual education program. Parent consent is required for testing and participation.
Speech and Hearing/Language Development
A licensed speech and hearing therapist checks students for hearing and speech concerns. Speech classes conducted during the school day address articulation, delayed language, voice, stuttering, and hearing loss. Parent consent is required for testing and participation.
School Psychologist
A licensed psychologist is assigned to the building to provide psychological evaluations of the children who are referred because of possible learning and behavioral disabilities. This testing is done only with the consent of the parents or guardians.
Family Services Coordinator
The Family Services Coordinator is a staff member who acts as a liaison between the home and the school in whatever capacity is needed to ensure a child's maximum school success. This includes:
Home visits
Parent workshops
Transportation to conferences
Transportation to medical appointments
Help with school problems
Help with behavior problems
Referrals to community resources
Title I
Title I provides extra help and instruction to K-2 students to strengthen reading and math skills. Title I placement is determined by test scores and classroom progress. The Title I lessons coordinate with the classroom curriculum. Students are referred for placement and parent consent is required.
Gifted and Talented
Gifted and Talented (G/T) classes are enrichment activities for third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Beginning second semester, a G/T teacher comes to the school weekly for small group instruction. Students are referred for placement in this gifted program and parent consent is required.
Student Evaluation and Conferences
Report cards are written reports for students and their parents indicating the teacher's appraisal of the student's academic achievement, attendance, and other information related to the overall program of the student. Computerized report cards are issued every nine weeks to students in Grades 1-5. Near the middle of each nine-week grading period, there will be notification of student's performance, known as a mid-term. Parents are encouraged to participate in the scheduled parent/teacher conferences. Parents may request a special conference at any time during the school year.
Student Evaluation Report Explanation
Students are evaluated with the symbols A, B, C, D, F and S, N, and U. The symbols indicated the student's performance on tasks related to the development of the skills and mastery of objectives. A plus (+) sign used with a letter grade indicates the student is approaching the next higher grade in that subject. A minus (-) sign indicates that the student is approaching the next grade lower.
A - Excellent (100% - 95%)
B - Above Average (94% - 88%)
C - Average (87% - 75%)
D - Below Average (74% - 70%)
F - Failing (69% and below)
Special Classes, Subjects, Effort, and Citizenship:
S - Satisfactory
N - Needs Improvement
U - Unsatisfactory

Character Counts
Each month, staff members may nominate students to be fine examples of one or more of the Six Pillars (Citizenship, Fairness, Caring, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Respect). Selected students receive a certificate from the Morgan County Character Counts Committee and a t-shirt.
Pillars of Paragon
Classroom teachers select one student per nine weeks as excellent examples of all Six Pillars. The selected students' pictures and award hand in the entry hallway of the school.
Super Panthers
Students must have good attendance and good citizenship. Selected students' pictures are hung on a bulletin board in the main hallway each nine weeks.
Bus Transportation
Riding the bus is a privilege provided to children by the school corporation. Children are expected to be at their bus stop on time and to behave in a proper manner. The following rules help ensure the safe transportation of students on the school bus:
Students are not permitted to ride any other bus except the one they are assigned unless written permission has been obtained prior to boarding.
Children should be waiting at their assigned boarding station five minutes prior to the pick-up time. Problems sometimes occur at the bus station because children arrive too early and have too much time before the bus arrives. If a student is late in arriving at the bus station, the driver may wait a short time. If the bus is already late for its appointed stop times, the driver may not wait at all.
Upon entering the bus, students go immediately to their seats and sit down.
No student shall stand or change seats after entering the bus.
Loud, boisterous language will not be tolerated.
Profane language or indecent conduct will not be tolerated.
Students are not allowed to tease, scuffle, trip, hold, hit, or use their hands, feet, or body in any objectionable manner.
Windows and doors are opened and closed only with permission from the driver.
Once the student has boarded the bus at home or school, they will not be allowed to de-board except at their regular unloading station.
Food, candy, and beverages are not to be consumed on the bus.
Students are not to bring items such as toys, hand-held games or music players on the bus. The school will not be responsible for loss of any items brought onto the bus or into the school.
Children will not be denied the privilege of riding the bus as long as they follow the rules and regulations that have been established. However, if a student does not cooperate with the bus driver, the following steps may occur:
A verbal warning will be given.
Parents/guardians will be informed by the bus driver by telephone or in writing that their child has not been cooperating and that heir assistance is needed. Written notice is given on the form "School Bus Conduct Report". This report is signed by the parent and returned to the driver.
Upon recommendations of the bus driver, the principal may deny the privilege of riding the school bus to any student who refuses to conduct himself/herself in an acceptable manner.
Individual Transportation
Walkers and students who routinely are picked up by a parent at the end of the day will be dismissed following the departure of all buses. If you are dropping off or picking up a child, we ask that you do the following:
The entire front length of the parking lot is reserved for buses from 8:15 - 8:55 a.m. and from 2:45 - 3:25 p.m. Please avoid this area at these times.
Drive up in single file behind the last bus. The line of cars should extend around the outer exterior of the parking lot.
Once the last bus has left, the line of cars may drive forward to the front doors. Please do not cut in line or drive down a middle aisle.
Children are not allowed to walk in front of other cars.
Do not park in the parking lot and walk across the drive to deliver or pick up your child at times of arrival or dismissal. Students are never allowed to cross the drive without supervision.
Only in rare cases will children be permitted to use the telephone. Students are responsible for seeing that they have their lunch or lunch money, library books, assignments, and all other equipment needed for the school day before they leave home. If a student plans to stay for an after-school activity, the family should be aware so that no call will be necessary. After-school social engagements are not the responsibility of the school, and valuable class time will not be consumed by making contacts to verify after-school social plans. Students will be sent home in their usual manner, unless a note is received by the teacher. Calling the school is acceptable but should not be a common practice. Calls to classrooms for changes in after-school plans are disruptive to the educational environment.
Students in Grades 3-4 are released from class on a voluntary basis for religious classes. These classes are held weekly and are non-denominational. The classes are held in a mobile unit just off of the school property. Religious Education is not a school-sponsored event.
Every year, our fifth graders attend a camp at Bradford Woods. This experience is part of the corporation science curriculum. The cost to attend is split between the corporation and the student. Paragon fifth grade students may participate in a grade level fundraiser to help defray student costs.
Teachers usually schedule one or two field trips per year. Parental/guardian permission is required for students to leave school grounds during the school day. We ask that parents/guardians sign a blanket field trip permission slip at the beginning of the school year. Usually, near the time of the actual field trip, teachers send another note with details concerning the trip and request parental/guardian permission for that particular trip. Parents/guardians are permitted to attend most field trips, but adequate seating may not always be available for parents to ride the bus with their child. Parents would be responsible for their own transportation in those instances. We expect and appreciate parental assistance on field trips but require that siblings not attend with parents. We intend to make certain that all adult supervision be focused on the students. Only immediate family members over the age of 18 are permitted to attend field trips. Often, teachers will assign additional students to the chaperones and only those capable of fulfilling that duty should plant to attend. Each teacher may pre-determine the number of chaperones who may accompany the class. All individuals will need to fill out a Criminal History form and have a clear Criminal History check and a clear Sexual Offender Registry check completed at least 48 hours prior to the trip date. Chaperones are expected to adhere to the school dress code, use appropriate school language, and refrain from the use of tobacco products. Only in rare instances are students to bring money or valuables on a field trip and only with the permission of the teacher in charge. It is now the policy of the corporation that all costs for the bus driver is absorbed by the individuals attending the field trip. No student is denied attendance due to financial circumstances. Those cases are handled in a confidential manner through the child's teacher. Assistance is usually supported by the PTO.
Three school-wide parties are held during the school year; Fall Party, Christmas Party, and Valentine's Day Party. Generally, parties are conducted at the end of the school day. The PTO helps organize the parties and supplies snacks and games.
A birthday party for any student should be approved, in advance, by the classroom teacher. Please understand that all birthday party refreshments must be commercially prepared or packaged products that may be shared at the end of the day. Food and beverages that would permanently stain or damage school property (such as red punch) should be avoided. Invitations for birthday parties outside of school should be mailed to individual students, unless every student in the class is to receive an invitation. This avoids hurt feelings and loss of class time.
