Volunteers
Needed
 |
Poston Road Elementary is always in need
of volunteers for field trips, school parties, working in the
classroom, etc.
The MSD of Martinsville has a policy
whereas all volunteers have to have a
background check (which means providing the school with your
legal name and birth date). This has to be done every year.
If you would like to be a volunteer,
please contact the Poston Road Office at 342-8408 ext. 1411-Mrs.
Rawlins. Thanks. |

Family Access |
|
Parents have the
opportunity to link to our Family Access site. You will have access to
your child’s attendance records, food service information, grades and
other important information. If you are interested in participating,
you should see Nancy Brosman (765-342-6641, Ext. 2) at the MSD of
Martinsville Administration Office. |

School
Messenger Service
School Messenger Service has begun. School Messenger allows teachers
and school or district administrators to send timely voice messages to
parents and/or guardians. Messages are scheduled for delivery to alert
parents and students to absences, events, emergencies and other important
issues.
Custody Orders
In order to follow
court orders concerning custody, we must have a current copy on file in our
office. If you have a court order, related to custody, visitation or
contact with your student, please assure that we have a copy on file.
Attendance
Attendance helps
determine whether a school meets Adequate Yearly Progress. As a parent,
there is little you can do about illness. However, we ask that you try to
schedule family travel, medical and dental appointments, and other
activities so they do not interfere with your child’s attendance. Classroom
instruction and performance suffer when your child is not here.
A phone call or
an attendance note is required from the parent each time a student is
absent. Please call the school office (342-8408) before 10:00 the day of
the absence. Let’s make a joint effort to raise our attendance rate.
Early Arrivals
The building opens at 8:50 a.m.
Students are not supervised prior to this time. Please monitor the time
your child leaves for school to make certain he or she does not arrive
before 8:50 a.m. Only students participating in the breakfast program need
to be here at 8:30 a.m.

Expectations for Behavior at
Poston Road Elementary |
 |
In order to achieve
our academic goals, we must provide an environment that supports
learning. Self-discipline is a major aspect of this supportive
environment.
Self-discipline is
best defined as the control exhibited in an individual’s behavior, both
action/reaction and physical/verbal, so that the civil rights and
dignity of others are protected. Situations in which the behavior
of any student disrupts the learning environment for others will require
initiation of discipline procedures by classroom teachers and/or
administrative personnel.
School rules,
expectations for behavior, and consequences for misbehavior are
communicated to students, parents, and staff at the beginning of the
year. Each party, student, parent, and staff member, will be asked
to read and sign a contract that outlines our expectations for behavior.
Consequences for
misbehavior, violation of school rules, or incomplete work are relevant
and appropriate. Each student will receive a Poston Pillar of Character
each week. Letter grades A + through F (13 grades in all) are
shown on the pillar. Misbehavior will result in the loss of a
letter grade. The Character Count document and contract were sent
home the first day of school.
Pillars will be sent home at the end of
each week. The must be signed and returned the first day of the
following week. |

Non-School Use of
Telecommunication Equipment:
It is the policy of the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville's Board
of School Trustees that students shall not use cell phones or pagers during
school hours and that all cell phones and pagers shall be turned off during
this time. If a student has an emergency and requests to use his or
her cell, they will be allowed to go to the office and either use their cell
phone or use the office phone. At Martinsville High School, IPods, CD
players, etc. maybe used in the hallways and during lunch periods, but not
in any classrooms. At elementary and middle school, IPods, CD players,
etc. may not be used. Those items if brought to school, must be stored
in a designated area.

Bullying As Defined by the Department of Education |
|
“Overt”, repeated
acts or gestures, including verbal or written communications
transmitted; physical act committed; or any other behaviors committed by
student or groups of students against another student with the intent to
harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate, or harm the other student.
The bullying rule
must apply when a student is on school grounds immediately before or
during school hours, immediately after school hours or at any other time
when the school is being used by a school group; off school grounds at a
school activity, function or event; traveling to or from school or a
school activity, function, or event; or using property or equipment
provided by the school.
This will be in
effect beginning with the 2005-2006 school year. |

your teacher. Thanks. |

Lunch Mentors Needed
The MSD of
Martinsville is looking for community volunteers to have lunch with select
elementary students once a week at school. These are kids who are "on
the brink of success," but in need of a little extra support and
encouragement. They would benefit from a one-to-one relationship with
a caring, responsible adult. No special skills are needed... you just
need to have a heart for kids. To become a lunch mentor or for more
information on our program, please contact Karen Mimna, Program Coordinator,
at 765-349-4288 or email at miminak@msdmail.net.

Information
from Food Service
In July 2004, the Child
Nutrition WIC Reauthorization Act was passed. In the act it states that
all free and reduced applications from the previous school year are
valid only for the first thirty (30 days) of the next school year. This
means that if school starts on 8/15/07, families must reapply by
9/15/07. After that date they will be removed from the program. This
date will fluctuate with each year’s start date.
Notice from Food Service
Beginning August 15, 2007
students will be allowed to charge a maximum of (5) lunches. Once a
student has reached the (5) lunch maximum he/she will be served an
alternate meal of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with milk.
Students will not be allowed to
charge breakfast and no alternative meal will be offered. There will be
no charging of ala carte items at any time.
Low balances notices (Positive
$5.00 or less) will be sent home with the youngest child a minimum of
(3) days per week and Negative balance notices (all balances less than
$0.00) will be sent home daily. |
|
More Information from Food
Service |
|
Note from Cafeteria:
When parents come to eat lunch with their
child/children they cannot use their child’s lunch account to purchase their
lunch. If a parent wants to charge their lunch to their child’s
account they must have their own pin number. Parents can get their own
pin number by contacting our Food Service Department, located at 909 S. Main
St. or call 349-4452. |
