General Information about the District Program Identification Process
2008 - 2009 Topics End of Year Showcase

Enrichment students are responsible for checking in with their teachers before going to the program and getting the work that will be missed. The Enrichment Program is based upon students’ grade point averages, attendance records, ISTEP math score, ISTEP language arts score, and the CSI score at the elementary level. Also, written teacher evaluations are assessed in this process. Mrs. Meyer is the school’s representative to the Enrichment Program. Mr. Hankins is the coordinator of activities. Congratulations to all the Enrichment students!

General Information about the District’s Enrichment Program:

The Metropolitan School District of Martinsville’s Enrichment Program is geared at providing special curricular challenges and activities for the high ability and high achieving students at all of the district’s schools.  Components of the Enrichment Program are:  pull-out for grades 3-7; differentiated instruction in the classroom for K-12; special programs and activities for K-12. The program coordinators submitted a grant to the State of Indiana, and the State funds received from that grant help provide for the District’s Enrichment Program to function.  The grant helps to fund an aide at every school for a pull-out program; the aide at each school only meets with the selected students for one-two hours per week for each grade level, starting in October.  Though the Enrichment Program students are engaged by the activities, this one-two hour per week opportunity is not inclusive of the district’s curriculum that is in place at each school to challenge the high achieving and high ability students.  The grant also funds a representative at every school, supplies, technology, and awards needed for the Enrichment Program.

Identification Process:

The Enrichment Program teacher representative at every school completes identification forms for third through seventh grade students based upon students’ grade point averages, attendance records, ISTEP+ math score, ISTEP+ language arts score, and the CSI score at the elementary level.  Also, written teacher evaluations are assessed in this process.  Using updated criteria, students must qualify every year; thus, if a student was involved with the program last year, he/she is not automatically placed in the program for this year.  If a student did not finish the program the previous year, his/her eligibility is evaluated.  Even if a student is identified and opts not to participate with the pull-out program, services for differentiated instruction will be offered in the specific domain identified.  Throughout the year, other assessments will be used for identification of high ability students in grades K-12.

Enrichment Program Topics for 2008-2009:

This year the Enrichment Program will feature a different topic for every grade level, 3rd Grade:  Environment;  4th Grade:  Morgan County History;  5th Grade:  Literature (Myths, Legends, Folktales);  6th Grade:  Science;  7th Grade:  Literature (Mysteries).  Students will engage in critical thinking and interdisciplinary activities, designed specifically for their grade level topic.  Then, students will be able to choose, from a variety of project choices (some include technology, some do not include technology), a project that appeals to them.  The remainder of the year will be dedicated to researching, creating, designing and putting together the students’ finished projects.  On April 14, 2009, the district will host a “Showcase Festival,” where student projects will be displayed for the community; students will also be recognized for their achievements with the group.  The project choices allow for the students to include brainstorming, researching, storyboarding, writing, and using technology; all project choices cover many state standards and challenge students on many levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.  The aides will challenge and foster creativity from the students.  This should be an exciting year!

End-of-the-Year Showcase Festival:

The MSD of Martinsville Enrichment Program for High Ability and High Achieving Students will be featured at the Showcase Festival on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Martinsville High School auditorium and cafeteria.
