LESSONS OF THE HOLOCAUST

 Background:  This unit focuses upon literature about the holocaust.  It includes nonfiction and fiction.  Therefore, the nonfiction includes “primary source” documents.  The fiction includes several different fiction books about events during WW II and the holocaust.

 Goals:  1.  Understand the events and people involved in the holocaust

2.      Practice using nonfiction, primary sources, such as articles, documents, etc.

3.      Read an interesting book for ACR!

Requirements: 

1.      Read a book from West library about the holocaust.

2.      If it is an ACR book, pass ACR test.

3.      If it is not an ACR book, complete the book report form.

4.      Complete a project (see below) about the book.  You may work with a partner on the project.  If you choose to work with a partner or two, the project must be divided between the partners.  Ms. Strange must approve partnerships and project assignments.

Projects: 

            1.  Construct a detailed posterboard with color pictures and captions that describes a related topic.  (Example:  Facts about Anne Frank, Holocaust figures, deportation of Jewish people, Maps of WW II, etc.,) 

OR

Construct a Power Point presentation about the book you read.

 2.      Research the chosen topic in computer lab. 

3.      Present your project to the class.  Explain a little about it and what you learned.

 

LESSONS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY

 Background:  This unit focuses upon literature about the history of African-Americans.  It includes nonfiction and fiction.  Therefore, the nonfiction includes “primary source” documents.  The fiction includes several different fiction books about young African-Americans and their experiences.

 

Goals:  1.  Understand the history of African-Americans.

2.      Practice using nonfiction, primary sources, such as articles, documents, etc.

3.      Read an interesting book for ACR!

Requirements: 

1.       Read a book from West library about African-Americans.

2.       If it is an ACR book, pass ACR test.

3.      If it is not an ACR book, complete the book report form.

4.      Construct an exhibit that illustrates a related topic. You may work with a partner on the project. If you choose to work with a partner or two, the project must be divided between the partners.  Ms. Strange must approve partnerships and project assignments.

Projects: 

1.       With a partner or group construct a detailed posterboard with color pictures and captions that describes and illustrates a related topic.  (Example:  Underground Railroad,  Maps of Routes, Civil Rights movement etc.,)

OR

     Construct a Power Point presentation about the book you read.

 2.      Research chosen topic in computer lab. 

3.   Present your project to the class and describe it and what you learned.

 OTHER ACTIVITIES:

 1.      Read article about celebration marking the closing of Auschwitz. Take quiz.

2.      Read about individuals taken to Auschwitz.  Construct star for each one and place on bulletin board.
