WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM

To be successful in the classroom, students must complete all of the assigned class work and homework. Completing all of the class work and homework in all of the classes, not only will help them learn more while they are at school, but completing class work and homework will also help to instill basic values as a part of the student’s regular schedule. Students will learn to be more responsible, they will learn to be accountable for their work, and they will learn to budget their time effectively. As educators, we are proactive in helping the students to complete their class work and homework, so that we can ultimately help to make them better students and citizens. At West Middle School, each teacher has a different homework policy for his/her class or subject area. All students are being encouraged to complete all of the work that is assigned. We believe that it is important that home and school work together to motivate students in the right direction to complete all schoolwork.

STUDENT COUNCIL VALENTINE PROJECT

This year the WMS Student Council will sell soft drinks to send to "Valentines". For 50 cents, one can purchase a canned drink (Coke, Diet Coke, or Sprite) to send to their friends on Valentine’s Day. For an extra 25 cents, one can insure their identity will not be revealed to the friend. The recipient can pay 25 cents to find out who sent their Valentine. If it is not insured, the name will be revealed. If it is insured, the student will have donated the 25 cents to the project. The money raised from this project and the Student Council dances will go to Riley Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.

HOW CAN YOU AVOID PEER PRESSURE PROBLEMS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL?

Q: I hear a lot about "peer pressure" in middle school. How can I help my child make friends who will not push him/her in the wring direction?

A: It is common to associate peer pressure with destructive behavior. However, peers can be a positive influence too. They can help your student stay safe, do well in school and be kind to others. To increase the chance of this:

Get to know kids at school. Seize opportunities to be involved, such as chaperoning field trips and attending school events. Encourage friendships that seem healthy.

Let your child invite friends to your house. If your child is shy, being at home can make your child more comfortable. Provide kid-friendly snacks and entertainment.

Support your child’s interest in after-school activities. Clubs and teams are good places to make friends with similar interests.

Meet the parents of other students. Introduce yourself on the phone or at school functions. Coordinate similar ground rules for kids to follow.

Provide high-quality supervision after school. Your child will be less likely to succumb to negative influences if he/she is monitored and happy.

READING CLUB

Starting February 7, Mrs. Baldwin will be having a reading club after school until 3:00 on Tuesday and Thursdays. This is for the students who need to work on ACR books or just want a place to read after school. Only serious readers may stay!
