PARENT-TO-PARENT WORKSHOPS Prime Time of Morgan County is sponsoring a Parent-To-Parent workshop. Parent-To-Parent is a nationally recognized video based program that empowers and enables parents. The goal of the program is to help parents develop competence, confidence, and commitment to guide their children through the adolescent years. The Passage Group was founded in 1988, by Bill Oliver. Its mission is to network, connect, and train parents to be a barrier between children and the pervasive influence of the “Toxic Culture.” We believe that when it comes to raising children in today’s society, schools can help, churches can help, and social services can help, but nothing can replace the power and influence a parent has on the behavior of their child. The workshop sessions will be held on Thursdays, Sept. 18 and 25, 6:30-8:00 P.M., or Saturdays, Sept. 20 and 27, 10:00-11:30 A.M. AFTER-SCHOOL HOMEWORK HELP PROGRAM West Middle School’s after-school Homework Help Program will begin, Tuesday, September 2. Students whose parents have given them permission by signing and returning the program form are available to participate. The immediate goal for the Homework Help Program is for the student to have extra help and supervision doing his/her homework. Homework Help is Monday through Thursday, from 2:30 - 4:00 after school (H.H. will not meet on PBA, early release days). Students will meet in the cafeteria, where they will complete homework given that day. A printed assignment sheet that lists all homework from every teacher will be given to students at the Homework Help Program. Students should have all or most of his/her homework completed before he/she leaves school. Homework Help sheets are available in the office, see Mrs. Forler, or call (765) 342-6628. WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL’S ONLY SCHOOL-WIDE 2008-09 FUNDRAISER West Middle School’s ONLY Fundraiser this year, will be a school-wide Spirit Shirt Sale. West’s Staff encourages each family to purchase at least ONE shirt. The student, parent, or grandparent, who wears the Spirit Shirt to a home sporting event, will receive FREE ADMISSION. (Events that are excluded are Jr. Mid-State and Tournament events). WMS Spirit Shirts are on sale for $30.00 during school hours. West Middle School’s goal is to sell 700 shirts. Again, there will not be trinkets, candles, candies, jewelry, wrapping paper, or any other typical fundraiser item to sell this year. West’s goal is for every staff member and every family to purchase at least ONE SHIRT. Money collected from this drive will go toward student activities and student programs. If the school has not been notified, the school will call home to ask why the student is absent. Please send a note with the student the day the student will return. Otherwise, the absence becomes an unexcused absence.

PICTURE DAY School pictures will be taken during Science class on Wednesday, September 10. Students should bring the picture form with the payment enclosed that day. If parents choose not to purchase pictures, the student must have their picture taken for the yearbook and West Middle School I.D. PBA DAY – EARLY RELEASE Martinsville schools will be released at 11:45 A.M. on Tuesday, September 30, due to PBA day, activities for staff. Transportation is provided as normal. Lunch will be served before the students are released. There will be no after school homework help and no activity bus on PBA day. CLUB MID – FREE – AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
The local YMCA is offering Club Mid, an after school program, for West Middle School students. Every Tuesday and Thursday, September 23 – December 11, after school, students will meet at West’s flagpole to be transported to the YMCA. Students involved in extra-curricular activities can participate, too; transportation is available at 4:00 P.M. as well. The program provides a safe, fun, environment for homework help, snacks, swimming and other fun activities. The students are challenged and taught to make good choices in life’s situations. This program will be awesome and exciting for all who participate. Club Mid is a free program and participating students will receive a free YMCA membership. Parents are to retrieve students at the YMCA by 6:00 P.M. Registration forms will be available in the cafeteria at a later date. West Middle School is incorporating a NEW Admission Card for athletic events. Purchase an Admission Card for $20.00, it allows entrance for ten sporting events. This is a more convenient method for larger size families. Regular admission prices for athletic events will be $3.00 for Adults and Students this year.

Paul Hadley, Mooresville – Travel north on S.R. 67 to Indiana Street (by Gray Brothers’ Cafeteria) and turn left. Drive through town to Carlisle Street. Turn left on Carlisle Street and Paul Hadley Junior High School will be on the right side past Mooresville High School.
Bedford – Travel south on S.R. 37 to Bedford to Hwy. 50 (second traffic light) and turn left. Go east through Bedford and follow Hwy. 50 about 3 to 4 miles east of Bedford to the school.
Owen Valley, Spencer - Travel South on S. R. 67 through Paragon and Gosport to U.S. 231 and turn left. (If you turn right you are headed for Cloverdale.) When approaching Spencer, you will come to a 4-way stop sign. At this 4-way stop sign, turn right and go through the main part of Spencer. This is still S.R. 67 to the right. Follow this road off to the right and soon you will see Owen Valley High School and Owen Valley Middle School by the high school.
St. Charles (Bloomington) - Travel south on S.R. 37 to the College/Walnut exit. Travel on Business 37 to the Hwy. 45/46 Bypass and turn left. Travel past the IU campus to 3rd Street and turn right. The school is approximately ½ mile down 3rd Street on the left.

ISTEP+ ANNOUNCEMENTS
ISTEP is Tuesday, September 16, Wednesday, September 17, and Thursday, September 18.
· Get a good night’s sleep before each testing day.
· Eat breakfast.
· Attend school every day during ISTEP+.
· Bring a pencil.
· Bring a library book.
· Finish all tests.
· Take your time
· Check answers.
· Study measurements.
· Know multiplication tables.
· With the writing portion, go through all of the writing steps, do brainstorming, organize, and check your work.
· With the writing portion, write as much as you can write. One paragraph is not enough.
· With the reading comprehension, read the passage first, then write the answers to the questions after you have read the story.
· With the reading comprehension, look for answers from the details in the paragraph.
· Study vocabulary.
· Be able to read a ruler.
· With the math sections that are not multiple choice, show all of your work in detail.
· Check your arithmetic.
· Use educated guessing and logic; eliminate down to two possible right answers.
· Make sure your answer is reasonable.
· When you are finished with a section, go back and recheck your answer.
· Make sure you are bubbling in the right answer for the right question.
· Read questions carefully, and follow directions.
· Don’t get frustrated on the first problem.
· On the Applied Skills portion, read the directions, follow through, go back and reread the directions.
· Taking the ISTEP+ test is kind of like participating in an event that you want to win.
· With ISTEP+, we all need to win for ourselves and for our school.
· We need to be the best we can be.
