PROCEDURE FOR REPORTING ABSENCES

If a student is absent from school, his/her parent should call school the day of the absence, before 9:00 A.M.  Later that morning, an automated server will call the parent about the student’s attendance.  Please send, or fax a Doctor’s excuse, as soon as possible. If the school has not been notified within 48 hours, the student’s absence will be unexcused.  West Middle School’s fax number is 765-349-5232.  West Middle’s attendance office is 765-342-6628, ext. 3068, Mrs. Voland.

AFTER-SCHOOL HOMEWORK HELP PROGRAM

West Middle School’s After-School Homework Help Program began Monday, Aug. 24, 2009.  It assists students, whose parents have given them permission by signing and returning the permission form.  The immediate goal for the Homework Help Program is for the student to have extra help and supervision doing his/her homework.  Homework Help is Monday through Thursday, from 2:30 - 4:00 P.M., after school.  Students will meet in the cafeteria, where they will complete homework given that day.  A printed assignment sheet that lists all homework from every teacher will be given to students at the Homework Help Program.  Students should have all or most of his/her homework completed before he/she leaves school.  The Homework help permission slip is attached to this edition of News & Notes.  If you have any questions, please call Ms. Forler, 765-342-6628, ext. 3058.

CLUB MID – FREE – AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The local YMCA is offering Club Mid, an after school program, for West Middle School students.  Every Tuesday and Thursday, September 15 – December 10, after school, students will meet at West’s flagpole to be transported to the YMCA.  Students involved in extra-curricular activities can participate, too; transportation is available at 4:00 P.M. as well. The program provides a safe, fun, environment for homework help, snacks, swimming and other fun activities.  The students are challenged and taught to make good choices in life’s situations.  This program will be awesome and exciting for all who participate.  Club Mid is a free program and participating students will receive a free YMCA membership.  Parents are to retrieve students at the YMCA by 6:00 P.M.  Registration forms will be available in the cafeteria soon.  If you have any questions, call the YMCA, Robin McDaniel at 765-342-6628.

CELL PHONES & ELECTRONIC ITEMS

It is MSD policy that students should not use cell phones, mp3 players, IPods, and/or CD players during school hours.  Cell phones should be turned off and kept inside the student’s locker.  This policy is in place to eliminate distractions in the classroom.

SAFETY CONCERNS FOR  STUDENTS

For their safety, students SHOULD NOT be in the side parking lot walking, running, or biking, etc. before or after school.  Teachers and staff park in the lot and are concerned with the safety of our students.  As school is dismissed, students are to leave in a quick manner.  Students are not allowed to simply “hang out” at school after 2:20 P.M.  Only those students who are staying with a teacher, coach, or sponsor as a supervisor are allowed to stay.

       MOVIE CLUB

All male students and faculty are invited to attend movies once a month after school from 2:25-4:15 P.M. in the Library.  This will be a great time for young men, and those not so young, to bond and enjoy activities after a long day at school.  Popcorn, soda, and a featured film will be provided for FREE.

Students MUST SIGN UP IN ADVANCE in Mr. Lindsey’s, school counselor, office by 7th period, the day of the movie.  The students will be dismissed to ride the activity bus or meet their parent in front of the school at 4:15 P.M.
