NATIONAL SPEAKER VISITS MARTINSVILLE
National speaker Bobby
Petrocelli’s story is one of personal triumph and hope following
a devastating tragedy in his life. Bobby will share with the
East Middle School and West Middle School onThursday, Nov. 19,
2009, during two convocations. He will share how he fought
through personal tragedy, drew upon his faith and friends to
help bring him through. Mr. Petrocelli will also present a
free presentation to the public, Thurs. Nov. 19, 7:00 – 8:30
P.M. in the High School auditorium.
NATIONAL JR. HONOR SOCIETY
COATS FOR KIDS
The National Jr. Honor
Society collected Coats for Kids during the month of
October. The majority of the 55 coats collected were collected
during the annual East/West football game. The donators
received a free drink at the game! Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2009, the
coats were distributed to the Red Barn. Mrs. Shover, NJHS
sponsor, extends a thank you to all who donated coats. Anyone
interested in donating new or gently used coats, please bring
them into the West Middle School office.
STUDENTS ATTEND I.R.T. FIELD TRIP
Approximately 50 students from West Middle School attended the
Indiana Repertory Theatre’s production of The Giver by
Lois Lowry on Monday, November 9, 2009. Following
the performance, students had an opportunity to interact with
the cast asking questions or giving comments about the play.
Our students were attentive during the performance, asked
thoughtful and relevant questions of the cast following the
performance, and were polite receiving compliments on their
behavior from the IRT staff. The chaperones
for this trip were Mrs.
Kempe, Mrs. McConnell, and Mrs. Brinegar. They were proud of
how the West Middle School students represented our school.

WMS
CHEERLEADERS PERFORM IN COMPETITION
The West
Middle School cheer team will compete at the Jr. Mid-State cheer
competition, Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, 2:30 P.M., at Greenwood
High School. Admission is $3. Ms. Lawson coaches the cheer
team. Below is West’s competition cheer team:

ANNUAL ARTESIAN CRAFT FAIR
The Annual
Artesian Craft fair will be held at East Middle School Saturday,
November 14, 9:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. The craft fair features over
80 booths of handmade items.

PARENTS/COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON-LINE SURVEY
West Middle School
needs your input! Please take the on-line survey to help
West Middle School continue to improve academic success.
Each school
in the MSD of Martinsville is going through the process to be
accredited by AdvancEd. Part of this accreditation process is
to have staff, parents, and community members participate in the
KEYS survey. KEYS is an on-line tool to help schools and school
districts build the internal capacity to begin this continuous
improvement journey. This on-line survey will be used as an
assessment tool that yields scores on 42 indicators of school
quality that correlates with high student achievement.

are completed anonymously and results are strictly confidential.

Schools only
know how many participants took the survey, not who took the
survey.
Please complete the survey by
Monday, November 16, 2009. You only need to take the parent
survey one time if you have multiple students enrolled at West
Middle School.

If you need
to exit while taking the survey, then click on “Save and
Exit.” Write down your password for when you decide to resume
the survey. When you go in again, you will need to follow steps
1-3 above. Then go to “returning user,” type in your password,
and click on “resume.” If you do not remember your password you
will have to start again.
If you do
not have access to a computer, please feel free to come to West
Middle School at your convenience during school hours and sign
in at the office. You may also call and make arrangements to
complete the survey after school hours. We will have a computer
available for you to complete the on-line survey. If you have

YMCA BOYS’ & GIRLS’ BASKSETBALL LEAGUE
The Barbara
B. Jordan, YMCA is now accepting registration forms for Middle
school boys’ basketball league. Registration forms are
available in the cafeteria and at the YMCA. The fee for
non-member is $70, and YMCA member fee is $50. The basketball
draft is Saturday, Nov. 14, 12:00 P.M. The registration
deadline is Friday, November 13, 2009.
STUDENT COUNCIL/ WCBK TOY DRIVE
The West Middle School
Student Council is teaming up with WCBK for their annual
Truckload of Christmas Toy Drive. Each Success class will be
asked to bring new toys. The Success class in each grade that
brings in the most toys will get a donut/juice party. We will
start collecting toys on Thursday, November 19 through Thursday,
December 10, 2009. Please support this valuable mission with
the WMS Student Council.

SECOND ANNUAL LITERACY NIGHT
West Middle School hosted their
second annual Literacy Night, facilitated by the Language Arts
Department. Language Arts students’ projects, reports and
assignments were on display in the cafeteria for the public to
view. The Scholastic Book Fair was made available in the
Library. The event was well attended by parents, grandparents
and students and the Book Fair profits were most successful!

BUS ROUTES
The Activity Bus runs each
weekday, Monday through Thursday.
Paragon
Park
by basketball courts at West Middle School at 4:25 P.M., leave at 4:30
P.M., goes to the high school and leaves the high school at 4:35 P.M.
Take West Middle School students for Brooklyn to their bus at the high
school
Follow Gray St. to Ohio, turn left and go to 37, cross 37, go through 37
at Burton Lane to Taco Bell and Southview Drive (if needed). Return to
37 South. Follow 37 to Legendary Hills, turn back north to motel, turn
right and to Jordan Road, to Liberty Church Road, and back to 37. Turn
left and go to Old 37 (if there are students up toard the forestry, go
to turn-around at State Police home and back to new 37) – if not, go up
hill to Paragon Road. Turn right and take Paragon Road to Paragon.
Stop at the IGA store and Paragon Elementary School. Go back to 67
North, making stops along 67 North where necessary. Go into Wigal
Addition at Hynsdale, on down 67 and back to Martinsville.
Centerton and
Brooklyn
Go to
East Middle School at 4:25 P.M., leave at 4:30 P.M. and go to the high
school. Leave the high school at 4:35 P.M.
Follow Gray Street to Garfield to the 39 Bypass, turn left to 67 North
to Lake Edgewood through lower road to Wilber Road. Turn right on
Wilber Road to 67 North. Go north on 67 (letting off students wherever
they live along the highway), to Mason Lane. Turn onto Mason Lane and
go to Robb Hill Road, turn right to the Shell Station and Quick Mart.
Cross 67 to Centerton School (if no students live in Centerton, leave
this stop off). Go back to 67, north to Brooklyn. Stop at the 4-way
stop in the center of town, at the school. At the 4-way stop north of
the school. Go back to 67, south and stop at Observatory Hill Road, if
needed. Go back to Martinsville.
Directions to other
schools
Clark-Pleasant Middle School
– Travel north on St. Rd. 37 to Hwy. 144, turn right. Travel
approximately 2.5 miles to 500 N (Whiteland Rd.), turn left. Cross St.
Rd. 31, turn left to enter the High School parking lot. Stay left and
drive around to the back of the
parking lot to the Middle School.
Greenwood Middle School
– Travel north on S.R. 37 to Smith Valley Road, turn right. Travel to
Madison Avenue, turn left. The school is located on the right.
Perry Meridian Middle –
Travel north on S.R. 37, turn right on Bluff Rd. (road north of County
Line). Travel to Stop 11 (stoplight), turn right. Travel 1.5 miles to
a 4-way stop. Travel through the 4-way stop and the parking lot will be
on the right.
St.
Charles, Bloomington -
Travel south on S.R. 37 to the College/Walnut exit. Travel on Business
37 to the Hwy. 45/46 Bypass and turn left. Travel past the IU campus to
3rd Street and turn right. The school is approximately ½
mile down 3rd Street on the left.
