General Music
taught by
Mrs. Shover
and Mr. Miller
The general music class at WMS is required
class for all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students not enrolled in any other music
class such as: band, orchestra, or choir. Each general music class,
at all grade levels, is a six weeks course.
-
Sixth grade general music class
has four units of study. The first two units concentrate on reading, writing, and basic
melodies with a discussion on the piano. The third unit exposes the students to the
instruments of the orchestra. The last unit
involves exploring
music from other cultures.
-
Seventh grade general music class has
two
units of study. The first unit reviews reading and writing music.
Students also have the
opportunity to create a melody on the computer. The second unit is an exploration into the history of Rock and Roll.
-
The eighth grade general music class has
three units. The first unit reviews reading and writing melodies. Along with
this, students also study form, harmony, and dynamics. They use these elements to write
their own masterpiece on the computer. The second unit is music history from the Classical
time period to the present, including the prominent composers. The last unit explores
careers in music. Students present a project after exploring careers such as:
radio disc jockey, music critic, jingle writer, pop star or music agent.
-
Students at WMS receive a good foundation in
music even though music may not be their primary focus. We feel that students should
receive a well-rounded in education in the arts as well as academics.
