Eligibility for participation

Both boys and girls may participate in athletics at West Middle School as long as they meet the following requirements:

  • Academic Requirement: Cannot have more than one (1) failing grade during any six (6) weeks grading period.

  • Must have a physical and parent's consent in order to participate. This physical must be completed before the first practice or tryout session of any sport. Physical forms are available in the school office; students MUST submit the required IHSAA form and not just a note from the doctor.

  • Must obey all training rules. Cannot use drugs, alcohol, smoke or chew Skoal or tobacco.

  • Must attend school on the day of practice or athletic event and must attend school on the day following an athletic event unless ill or injured.

  • Participation in athletics is a privilege. Misbehavior at school could result in suspension of extracurricular privileges (see conduct code).

NOTE: Suspension from school for grades or misbehavior means that a student may practice, but not dress or participate in the sport.

Student athletes should manage their time in such a way as not to have to miss practices, competitions, or school in order to participate in athletics and achieve success in academics.

Insurance information

The Metropolitan School District of Martinsville is not required to provide funds for athletic injuries received by students participating in sports. A cooperative insurance plan may be purchased through the Morgan County Insurance Agency for a nominal fee. You may feel that you have adequate insurance with Blue Cross or other type of company. In any case, before participating, a boy or girl must have paid for his or her school insurance or turned in an insurance waiver form signed by the parents.
