Services provided for students include school health services in the clinic, the guidance and couseling program, a family services coordinator, cafeteria, library, bookstore, and telephone.

School Health Services (The Clinic)

The clinic is staffed part of the time by Susie Lee, a registered nurse. Mrs. Lee meets the qualifications of both the State Board of Education and State Nurses' Association as a public health nurse. She is based at West Middle School and also serves several elementary schools. While here part time, she is on call at all times and may be reached for emergencies and consultations. An aide, Shirley Haggard, is trained in first aid and CPR and is in the clinic full time.

Students may come to the clinic before or after school, during their lunch period, or during class with a pass from their teacher. Nursing services include vision and scoliosis screenings, compliance with immunization and other state laws, health instruction, counseling with students, families, and staff, and handling emergencies.

Proof of immunizations and second measles shot is required by law before starting 6th grade.

ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE BROUGHT TO THE CLINIC, BEFORE HOMEROOM, IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER, WITH A NOTE FROM THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN WITH COMPLETE AND SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMINISTERING THE MEDICATION. THIS INCLUDES TYLENOL, ADVIL, OR ANY NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUG. (FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS RULE CONSTITUTES A VIOLATION OF THE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE POLICY.)

Guidance and Counseling Program

Guidance counselors are specially trained to help you realize your full potential as a unique being. Specifically, the Guidance Department will help a student with problems such as:

  • Developing work habits and attitudes which will help students in school and later on the job.
  • Developing friendships.
  • Developing good study habits, goal setting, and time management
  • Developing an understanding of themselves and their interests and abilities.
  • Developing good communication skills with family and friends.
  • Developing decision-making abilities.
  • Developing a sense of direction toward life career choices.

Students can drop by during their free time or can make a special appointment to see a counselor. There may also be times when it is necessary for a counselor to call a student in for a discussion. Remember, whatever is shared with a counselor is confidential.

Parents and teachers who are concerned about a pupil may also refer a pupil for counseling or request a conference for themselves by contacting Mrs. Harmon or Mr. Lindsey in the Guidance Office.  West Middle School also has access to weekly services provided by Mr. Pete Link, Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  Please contact Mr. Lindsey to make an appointment with Mr. Link.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria is located on the west side of the building. It is operated by the school to promote the health of school children through good lunches at the most reasonable cost to the student. Type A lunches are served on the west line. Additional sandwiches and other food items may be purchased at an extra cost for the student. Lunches can be paid in advance or by the day. Students can access prepaid lunch money with their PIN number provided to them by the cafeteria.  The menu is posted online, in the cafeteria and also in the classrooms. Students may purchase additional milk to supplement either a purchased lunch or one that was prepared at home. In order to maintain a cafeteria of which we can be proud, students should abide by the following general rules:

  • Students are not to cut into the line of fellow students awaiting lunch service unless special permission has been granted by a teacher. This special permission slip must be presented to the teacher on duty in the cafeteria.

  • To avoid disrupting other students eating lunch, students are not to walk through the area in which the tables are located unless they are looking for a place to be seated while eating. Please use the area next to the east and west walls when getting in the lunch line.

  • While waiting in line, students are to keep their hands off all window areas and walls.

  • In order to be fair to all students waiting for lunch, a student who wishes to purchase milk and/or only part of a meal should await his or her turn for service in the line.

  • Students are to exhibit good table manners at all times. Nothing is to be thrown or tossed in the cafeteria at any time.

  • When finished eating, students will carry trays to the window of the dish room, leaving the tables as clean as possible for use by other students.

  • All food served in the lunchroom must be eaten in the lunchroom.

  • Students are not permitted to charge lunches in the cafeteria or office.

Library

The West Middle School Library is open throughout the school day. Students may come to the library with their classes for research or for selecting books, or they may come on an individual pass written by a teacher. Students may check out two books at any given time. A book may be checked out for two weeks and may be renewed for an additional two weeks. Fines of .10 per day will be charged for overdue books, and students will be assessed replacement costs for lost or damaged books.  Please contact the librarian, Ms. Valentine, if you have questions.

The library has a wide selection of fiction, nonfiction, and biographies, and we subscribe to a large number of magazines. Students are encouraged to use the library’s computers to access networked software and research databases. These research resources are available to WMS families, as well.  Please note that students must submit an Acceptable Use Policy Form signed by their parents before receiving a computer account or using the Internet in the library or in the computer lab.

  • Paper, Pens, Colored pencils
  • Folders, Rulers, Posterboard
  • Pencils, Erasers, Assignment books
  • A machine containing the following is also available at all times outside the library:   notebook filler paper, pens, and pencils

Telephone

A pay telephone for student use is located in the main entrance of the building. Students may use this phone by pass only. All students should bring money each day in case an emergency call is necessary. Students are discouraged from using the telephones in the office area, as lines need to be kept open for office use. A pay phone is also available in the gym.
