SIXTH GRADE COURSES

Math - Development of problem solving strategies, reasoning skills and their application to problem solving situations. Review of basic computational skills involving whole numbers and decimals. Fractions, percents, measurement and geometry will also be taught. An accelerated math class is also offered moving at a faster rate.

English - A review and strengthening of writing, spelling and grammar skills. Punctuation, capitalization and parts of speech usage are reinforced. An emphasis is placed on writing for different purposes and audiences. Basic research skills are introduced.

Reading - A one year review and strengthening of reading skills. Elements of fiction are emphasized along with strategies for reading non-fiction material. Different types of literature are explored and appreciation of literature is also emphasized. Students are encouraged to view reading as a pleasurable pastime.

Social Studies – The study of earth’s features, geography, and the culture of Western Civilization. Students will also study map reading and reasoning skills necessary for continued growth in social studies.

Science - A program of general science utilizing both teacher demonstrations and pupil participation. Science topics covered include the areas of biological, physical and earth science.

Health - The health curriculum is to enable students to describe the basic structure and function of the systems of the human body and to explore what young teenagers have in common so that they recognize the changes of adolescence to be normal.

Physical Education - A trimester-long course to develop motor patterns and coordination. Students are required to wear appropriate clothes, tennis shoes and white socks.

Fine Arts - A trimester-long study of art and music that includes the following courses:

  • Art - Students do an in-depth study of the elements of art. They work through line, shape, color, texture, value, space and form by completing artworks of still life, animal drawings, bichromatic painting, formal and informal balance design and a 3-d art medium of clay or paper mache'. Students study artists of the cave painters, Audubon and Grant Wood. Students learn and participate in art critiques.
  • Music - A six-week overview of basic music concepts. Students learn the types of music, to read and write music, the piano keyboard and orchestra instruments.

Life Tech- A trimester-long component that includes the following components:

  • Industrial Technology - A six-week course to introduce students to technology. The students will learn the purpose, definition, processes, areas, and impact of technology on our lives and the environment.
  • Life Management - Life Management is a six week course during the year for all sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.  During the six weeks, students do several hands-on projects and various activities.  Sixth grade students:
    • Will learn basic sewing skills by sewing a pillow and stuffed football.

    • Will learn basic cooking skills and prepare a simple recipe.

Students with a stronger interest in music may enroll in one of the following courses in place of the fine arts component.

  • Choir - A beginning experience in performing choral group. Good choral procedures, tone production and two-part music reading are stressed. Maximum academic achievement requires attendance at performances.
  • Orchestra - Learning to play music as a group will be stressed, along with proper posture, position and tone for string instruments. Students provide their own instruments. Maximum academic achievement requires attendance at performances.
  • Band - A beginning band experience. The sixth grade band serves as a training period for students who wish to be in the performing band. Technical skills will be stressed. Maximum academic achievement requires attendance at performances. Students provide their own instruments.
