The West Middle seventh and eighth grade football teams start practicing before school begins. The season goes through October. The coaching staff aspires to prepare their student athletes for high school football with the hope of preparing the players for a state championship someday. The WMS coaches take pride in teaching the players teamwork, discipline, and the value and rewards of hard work. The coaches also stress to the players the importance of schoolwork and support the players in whatever way possible to maintain a good grade point average. Coach Helms commented, "The first thing we talk about on the first day of practice is education and how important it is to keep up their grades."
